Blood, sweat and bugs: On the battlefield of the manuscripts

In Papiergewittern (The Storm of Paper): Major Ernst Jünger Exhibition in Marbach am Neckar, Stuttgart

From 7 November 2010 to 27 March 2011, the German Literature Archive in Marbach is presenting an exhibition entitled “Ernst Jünger. Arbeiter am Abgrund” (i.e. "Ernst Jünger. worker on the brink") at the Literaturmuseum der Moderne.

At the heart of the exhibition are over 280 diaries and manuscripts written by the writer and philosopher during the course of his life. For visitors unfamiliar with Jünger, the exhibition offers an introduction to Ernst Jünger’s long life and extensive oeuvre. The majority of the 600 or so exhibits have never before been exhibited or published.

A second, revised, edition of "Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger 'In Stahlgewittern'"

Ernst Jünger's original war diary Kriegstagebuch 1914-1918, edited by Helmuth Kiesel, is now published by Klett-Cotta (September 2010).

Professor Kiesel's work is thorough indeed. The book is a must for all who are interested in Jünger's war books. Kiesel uses the regimental history and my
Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger 'In Stahlgewittern' in order to place the text at the battlefield and map. The text is transcribed from the diary, not reproduced photographically, so it can not be described as a facsimile. That is not bad - the handwriting in Jünger's diary is very hard to read.

All drawings
Jünger made in the diary are reproduced photographically. That is excellent. Unfortunately they are printed in rather small black and white pictures.

Reproductions of Jünger's diary drawing in Kriegstagebuch 1914-1918 (black and white, to the left) and in Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger 'In Stahlgewittern' to the right (full colour and often full size).

There are now three books which in detail cover Jünger's World War I experiences - and one DVD. Apart from Kisels annotations there are my Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger 'In Stahlgewittern' (2007) and René Senteur, De Bazancourt à Favreuil: Sur les traces d'Ernst Jünger (2010). Then there is François Lagarde's impressive DVD-Rom Le rouge et le gris: Ernst Jünger dans la Grande Guerre (2007).The three books and the DVD are complements to each-other: Kiesel's is of course the literature student's first choice and Senteur's is the amateur military historian's. It should be noted that Kiesel do not use the photographs in Jünger's archive at the DLA. What makes Senteur's book and François Lagarde's DVD-Rom interesting in my view is that many original photographs from Jünger's archive at DLA are published here. There are no original diary drawings in Senteur's book though. In Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger "In Stahlgewittern" there are both drawings from the diary and photographs from the archive - not all drawings and photographs, but carefully chosen and of high quality.

Begleitbuch zu Ernst Jünger "In Stahlgewittern" has been sold out for a while. However, Mittler & Sohn Verlag plans to publish a second, revised edition this autumn (2010).

See a review of Kriegstagebuch 1914-1918, "Heut nachmittag fand ich zwei Finger- und Mittelhandknochen", by Lothar Müller, and an article, "Im Meer der Bewegungslosigkeit", by Kurt Kister in Süddeutsche Zeitung 22 September 2010. The Kurt Kister, who will be editor-in-chief of the newspaper, writes also about the Begleitbuch:

"[...]

[...]"
Further news:

The publisher Michael Klett, professor Helmut Kiesel and the journalist Julia Encke from Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung will discuss Jünger's war diary at Literaturhaus Stuttgart the 25th October 2010 at 20:00.

A new big Jünger exhibition will open in November 2010 at Deutsche Literaturarchiv Marbach (DLA): "
Ernst Jünger. Der Nachlass". Jünger's 260 diary notebooks will be exhibited.

Then in March 2011, when the DLA-exhibition will close, the Jüngerhaus in Wilflingen will re-open, after a renovation.

L’exposition "Histoires d’Hommes"

Otto Dix (1891-1969) and Ernst Jünger (1898-1998) are often compared in regard of being honest but unconventional and also provocative describers of their experiences of war.

Like Jünger, Otto Dix volunteered for the German Army in the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Dix served as machine-gunner and platoon leader of a machine-gun unit and saw - like Jünger - action at Somme, Artois and in Flanders (and in Russia, unlike Jünger), and Dix took, like Jünger, part in the German March offensive 1918. Like Jünger, Dix was wounded seriously several times during the war, and like Jünger, Dix had by the end of the war won the Iron Cross (although second class, and Dix had not been awarded with the Pour le Mérit).

In 1959 Otto Dix and Ernst Jünger were awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany). Almost 30 years later (1985) Jünger was awarded the Großes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern und Schulterband (Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon).

Like Ernst Jünger's war-account In Stahlgewittern (The Storm of Steel) from 1920, Otto Dix' expressionist war-art of the 1920s is hard and horrible description of war. Nevertheless, Dix has several times, like Jünger, expressed unconventional views of the personal war-experiences, for example:
(Stuttgarter Zeitung, 3oth November 1961)

or:

Among other famous quotations by Otto Dix these are (translated and without references) examples:

"I had to experience how someone beside me suddenly falls over and is dead and the bullet has hit him squarely. I had to experience that quite directly. I wanted it. I'm therefore not a pacifist at all - or am I?' "

"I have to experience all the ghastly, bottomless depths for life for myself; it's for that reason that I went to war, and for that reason I volunteered."

"I was afraid as a young man. The heavy barrage was like hell. But the farther up you moved, the less afraid you were. At the real front ... you weren't afraid at all. There are all the phenomena that I absolutely had to experience."

Otto Dix' well-known series of 50 prints (etchings) in 5 parts from 1924 "Der Krieg" ("The War") is on permanent display at the French official museum of the First World War, L'Historial, in Péronne.

World War through the Stereoscope

Along the former Western Front there are here and there small dark bar-café museums with vintage coin operated stereoscopic photograph viewers preserved from the 1920s battlefield tourism period, each showing dozens of often ghastly images of the World War I in black and white 3D.

Realistic Travel's caption: "At the bayonet's point our lads rush and capture a German machine-gunner in his lair at Croisilles."

Keystone's caption: “No Man's Land Near Lens, France"

Stereographs from World of Stereoviews!

Stereoscopic photos of the war were also sold to the public, by for example Realistic Travels, Neue Photographische Gesellschaft (NPG), Underwood & Underwood and Keystone View Company. These stereo cards were often sold in a boxed set with a mobile stereoscope, similar to the popular View-Master of the 1970s.

Les écrivains de la Grande Guerre

L'Historal de la grande guerre in Péronne (in partnership with Maisons et lieux d’écrivains en Picardie) has recently published a brochure in English, auf Deutsch and au Français, Les écrivains de la Grande Guerre, about the many international writers and poets who took part in the Great War, for example "célebrès comme Blaise Cendrars, Georges Duhamel ou Ernst Jünger", as La lettre de l'Historial (No. 22, Novembre 2007) says.

This nice little booklet
can be ordered for free at L'Historial's new web site, where a "Bibliographie: La Grande Guerre dans la Somme" is published, and the Service éducatif department of the museum offers guided literary tours, "circuits littéraire".
