On the 18th March 1917 the British troops found Stokes' grave on the field visible at the photograph above, that is about 100 meters northwest of the Villers-Carbonnel French military cemetery today. The War Diary of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Muster Fusiliers gives the details:
"The grave was wired around and a wooden cross erected with the inscription 'LTN. STOKES. R. MUNS. Fus – killed 6-3-17 [sic! 5-3-17].' This had been done by the enemy. Our men planted box palm around the grave and put white stones around it."
